TOLKIEN—A TRILOGY BASED ON MAPS. Michael Fitzgerald had a review in the Wall Street Journal (July 31, 2018) of an exhibit at Oxford’s Bodleian Library of maps and drawings that Tolkien used in writing the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Among the items on display are logs that Tolkien used to plot day-by-day the journeys of his characters. There are also 30 maps drawn by Tolkien. These maps were part of his master “working map” which was centered on the Kingdom of Rohan.
Tolkien said about THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy: “I wisely started with a map and made the story fit.”
The exhibition will be at the Morgan Library in New York in January, 2019.
