HYGGE—DANISH CHRISTMAS PLATES. Reading about “cocoa by candlelight”, I was reminded of the Danish Christmas plates, issued annually, which my mother collected. She gave a plate to each of us each Christmas, and we have a number of them on the walls of our dining room today. Here is a website showing all of the Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates from 1908 to 2014. Here is a website showing Bing & Grondahl Christmas plates.
I quoted Judith Flanders here, who wrote about: “the kind of cosiness—the Danish word is hygge—that can only be found inside ‘when set against a real or metaphorical cold world outsideâ€. Many of the plates show snow outside in contrast with warmth and light indoors. A number of the plates feature candles.
