HOW NERO’S GOLDEN HOUSE INFLUENCED THE RENAISSANCE. The wikipedia entry on the Golden House tells how in the late fifteenth century a boy fell through an opening in the side of the hill, and the decoration of the underground palace became known. Some of the greatest Italian painters, among them Michelangelo, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio, and Raphael, were lowered by ropes into openings that were originally believed to be caves. Instead, they saw what became the main source of knowledge of the ancient Roman styles of painting that so heavily influenced the art and architecture of the Renaissance.
