THE PERRY MASTODON. The owners of the property on which the Perry Mastodon acted very differently than the owners of the property where the Yorktown mastodon (or mastodons?) was found over 30 years ago. The Perry Mastodon was found on property owned by the family of a good friend of my father, Judge Joseph Sam Perry. Judge Perry was thrilled by the discovery. A large bone from the Perry Mastodon was first discovered in 1963. I visited Judge Perry’s chambers with my father shortly after the discovery. Judge Perry showed us a number of pictures of the excavation. Here are a series of photos showing the process of excavation and a series of photos showing how a reconstruction of the mastodon was prepared for exhibition.
