THE SCALE OF THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY FLAWED TESTIMONY BY FBI EXPERTS. Spencer Hsu’s article outlines some of the immensities of the problem. The errors go back over two decades. There are trials affected in 46 states. Even if only hair matches are considered, the reviews to date have covered only 342 cases out of about 2500 cases. The reviews apparently began in earnest in 2012, so it’s slow going. Hsu adds that “the same FBI examiners whose work is under review taught 500 to 1,000 state and local crime lab analysts to testify in the same ways”. And there are standards being prepared right now for 19 other forensic disciplines.
