HOW BIG IS THE CANDLE MARKET? I posted here about possible answers to a question of Annalisa’s: Why should there be two candle shops right next to each other in a Richmond mall? At the time, I thought to myself that it was remarkable that a mall could provide enough business to support two candle stores. I now find out that I was wrong about the size of the candle market. Serena Ng had an article in the Wall Street Journal (September 3) about an agreement to purchase Yankee Candle Co., the country’s largest maker of scented candles. Yankee Candle makes candles with scents ranging from vanilla to bacon and operates about 560 stores in North America. The price for the company is 1.75 billion dollars. I could never have guessed that scented candles were so popular.
