THE PACE OF BASEBALL IS JUST FINE. This article by Benjamin Hoffman in the New York Times appears to be about the new instant replay rules. However, Hoffman dwells not on the improvement from getting decisions right but on whether the time taken for the replay will slow down a game which he thinks is too slow already. He says that major league baseball “may be slowing down an already slow game….” I posted here that my father used to say that it was mainly sportswriters who complained about baseball games taking too long, and that they did so because they wanted a shorter work day. In the post, I quoted Mariano Rivera, who wisely said about an umpire who complained that a baseball game was too long: “If he has places to go, let him do something else.â€
