OF COURSE, THERE’S A WHITE SOX—CUBS RIVALRY. Kevin Chroust, in this Yahoo Sports article, claims that there is no rivalry between the White Sox and the Cubs because the White Sox and the Cubs don’t play each other very much during the regular season. Yet the White Sox and the Cubs have had what fans thought was a rivalry for almost a century before there was any interleague play. This wikipedia article tells about the almost yearly exhibition games the teams played between their World Series meeting in 1906 (won by the White Sox) and interleague play beginning in 1997. I remember my father talking about what he called the “City Series”. Here is a link to questions and answers about the City Series with some scores from 1915, 1916 and the 20’s and the 30’s. One comment says that some 25 games in the “City Series” were played between 1903 and 1942. The responses reflect the importance that White Sox fans give to past exhibition games with the Cubs. Rivalries are created by history and there’s a lot of history.
