THE CARBOHYDRATE DIET—POLITICAL CAMPAIGNING IN NORTH KOREA. This article by Ernesto Londono in the Washington Post (April 13) describes how King Jon Un, the current leader of North Korea, was chosen to to succeed his father and grandfather rather than one of his two older brothers. Says Londono: “Before he began appearing at official functions, the government spent months shaping Kim Jong Un’s image in an apparent effort to emulate his grandfather…. That endeavor, detailed by defectors, included feeding the prospective leader a carbohydrates-rich diet to make him corpulent and round-faced.”
