380,000 YEARS AFTER THE BIG BANG. I began this blog with a post about the evidence of the Big Bang in our night sky. I was astounded that scientists had been able to find data about an event that took place over 13 billion years ago. And new discoveries are being made. This article from in Time in December 2012 by Michael Limonick reports on a the discovery by use of the Hubble of seven galaxies which came into existence from only 400 to 600 million years after the Big Bang. Now the Planck satellite has enabled the publication of “a map of the cosmic microwave background radiation — a distant remnant of the Big Bang”. The map provides information about the universe only 380,000 years after the Big Bang. Here in an article by Terrence O”Brien at the Engadget website are the map and a press release which explains what has been found. The results lead to what seem to be slight revisions in previous information about the universe. The universe is now thought to be about 13.82 billions of years old. “Normal matter that makes up stars and galaxies contributes just 4.9% of the mass/energy density of the Universe. Dark matter, which has thus far only been detected indirectly by its gravitational influence, makes up 26.8%, nearly a fifth more than the previous estimate.”
