GET CARTER—PORTRAYING THE NEWCASTLE CRIME SCENE. I tend to read fiction and watch movies for the plot, so I classified Get Carter as a fairly straightforward revenge movie. The accurate portrayal of what the wikipedia article calls “the contemporary criminal underworld of Newcastle” gave the movie its power, but I wouldn’t have mentioned it if you had asked me about the movie. The wikipedia article says that that Michael Caine wanted to make the movie to show what gangsters were like—that they were not stupid or funny, as British movies portrayed them. Caine knew what gangsters were like because he had “friends and family members who were involved in crime.” The article quotes Caine: “”Carter is the dead-end product of my own environment, my childhood; I know him well. He is the ghost of Michael Caine.”
