RUNNING WITH A BROKEN LEG—-MANTEO MITCHELL. As this Associated Press report describes, American sprinter Manteo Mitchell broke his leg halfway through a qualifying race in the Olympic 4×400 relay relay event (four runners each run about 400 yards). He completed the heat in what is described as “a more-than-respectable 46.1 seconds”, and his team qualified to advance. Mitchell ran about twice the length of a football field on a broken leg. It’s a complete break of the left fibula. It’s expected to heal in four to six weeks.
