GUINNESS AND THE HISTORY OF STATISTICS. Guinness made another major contribution to science. W.S. Gosset, one of the great statisticians of all time, worked for Guinness in Dublin from 1899 to 1935. This wikipedia article on Gosset tells how he did not publish under his own name because Guinness was concerned about the loss of trade secrets. His pseudonym was “Student”. “Thus his most famous achievement is now referred to as Student’s t-distribution.” Student’s t-distribution is used to deal with small samples. Small samples were important to brewers.
