YOU KNEW WHAT I MEANT—A NEW BLOG. Here is a new blog devoted to exploring how students learn to write and think. It’s also funny. I have heard Mary Jane laughing out loud while reading it a couple times already, and it’s only a couple weeks old. R.A. Baumgartner has been teaching writing and literature at the college level for a number of years, and has naturally collected a number of student gaffes. An example I liked: “God…is known as and considered to be top notch.†(see here). The importance of the blog is that RAB analyzes the thinking that lies behind the gaffes. In this case, in student culture, “the element of tone seems no longer to be a reliable guide in word choice…” RAB’s generosity is shown by her summary: “… true, … comprehensible …disconcerting at best.”

Thank you, Philip! How nice! I’ve been trying to post links to blogs so readers can go to them from my site, but they don’t show up….I’m still learning WordPress. I’d love to link to yours. XOXOXO
