WHAT HAPPENED IN THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION—AN UPDATE. One of the questions I have wondered about for the last 50 years is: Did the Industrial Revolution help the common man? I posted on the question here, with a wonderful quote from E.P. Thompson vividly describing how the benefits for the average working man were “paltry”. In googling about the “Industrious Revolution”, I came across a wonderful review essay (84 pages long) by Joel Mokyr, summarizing the findings on the Industrial Revolution of the new economic history. I switched from studying economics to law school in 1965, and I have a continuing curiosity to find out what happened after I left, so I am very happy to have this essay.
