MY VOTE FOR TRANSLATING SHAKESPEARE (COMMENT).

MY VOTE FOR TRANSLATING SHAKESPEARE (COMMENT). I was going to post today on my view that there should be performances of Shakespeare in translation. Kent Richmond in a comment on yesterday’s post has powerfully stated my main argument: “You say that Shakespeare works for a lot of people, and that cannot be denied. But that also means that Shakespeare doesn’t work for a lot of people. That leaves an opening for translations.” The fact that performances of Shakespeare in good translations would greatly increase the audiences for Shakespeare seems to me an unanswerable argument. Chaucer and Dante remain powerful in translation and so would Shakespeare.
