REASONS FOR QUESTIONING A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. Judith Fleming elaborates on her question by saying that “It has three scarcely related actions….Its characters are walking contradictions.” It is hard to imagine another playwright— then or later—combining three such different sets of characters—the mechanicals, the fairies and the royals. Fleming sums up: “It can be argued that such dramatic inconsistencies are essentially English (perhaps as the expression of an island pragmatism that can’t be bothered to get things quite right).”

    Did he contradict himself? Very well, he did contradict himself. He was large. He contained multitudes.

    And, c’mon, there’s no real contradiction, is there? Just generosity.
