THE REAL MOST UNBREAKABLE BASEBALL RECORD.

THE REAL MOST UNBREAKABLE BASEBALL RECORD. Alex Rodriguez knocked in seven runs in one inning on the last day of the Yankee regular season, breaking the American League record for most RBI’s in one inning. Yahoo invited readers to search for the “most unbreakable baseball records” and a search turns up this list of the 10 most unbreakable records. The first item on the list is Cy Young’s 511 lifetime wins. Cy Young pitched in the “dead ball” era, and it does seem unbreakable. Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens have each won 350 games recently, and they are more than 150 games short of Cy Young. However, I think that Number 3 on the list is more the kind of record that is unbeatable than records which result from longevity. Record number 3 was set by Johnny Vander Meer when he threw two consecutive no hitters. It would take three to break the record. I think the most unbreakable record is like Vander Meer’s record. It is referred to in this article about ARod’s new American League record. Fernando Tatis holds the National League record for most RBI’s in an inning with 8. But when Tatis did it, he hit two grand slam home runs in the same inning off the same pitcher (Chan Ho Park). I think that’s the most unbreakable record. I don’t think anybody else is ever going to hit three grand slam home runs off the same pitcher in one inning.

I always absolutely loved this record. Let’s say the inning starts with the three batters ahead of Tatis reaching base. Then he hits the grand slam. Park has now allowed 4 runs.

There are then 8 batters until Tatis reaches base again. Let’s say two of them make outs, and then three reach base to load them up again for Tatis. That still leaves three more guys who must have scored – there’s nowhere else to put them. So, Park had allowed 7 runs, and loaded the bases in THAT INNING when Tatis came up to bat again.

The manager really had given up on that game.
