MARILYN MONROE AND JOE DIMAGGIO. Leonard Mlodinow begins his article with a story about Joe DiMaggio, just back from World War II, going to a Yankee game with his four-year old son, Joe, Jr. The fans were soon chanting DiMaggio’s name. The four year old looked at his father and said, “Everybody knows me.” This reminded me of an exchange that Marilyn Monroe is supposed to have had with DiMaggio when they were married. Marilyn had gone to Korea to entertain the troops. You can imagine the impact of Marilyn Monroe on a huge crowd of soldiers. Marilyn told DiMaggio about this, and said, “Joe, you never heard such cheering.” “Yes,” said DiMaggio, “I have.”
