THOUSANDS OF PURPLE MARTINS. Lee Bryant sent me this report about how thousands of purple martins have returned to Shockoe Bottom in Richmond. The martins “swarm the skies” at sunset, spend the night in trees, and take off at dawn. The birds first started to flock to Shockoe Bottom in large numbers in 2007. Some 8000 are expected before they leave for Brazil in August. Why did the birds suddenly focus on Shockoe Bottom?
