BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS. Joshua Jelly-Schapiro has an article in the April 9 New York Review of Books about four books on Bob Marley. The link has only the first paragraph of the article, which sketches Marley’s importance–voted third greatest song-writer of all time behind John Lennon and Bob Dylan, a voice for millions of people who are often unheard. The article describes how Marley was influenced by Rastafarianism. Rastafarians revered Haile Salassie as the living Christ. Rastafarians had a strict morality. Although they encouraged the ritual smoking of marijuana, they scorned the “corrupted capitalist West”, which they called “Babylon.” They referred to police cars (symbols of Western authority and white patriarchy) as “Babylon cars.”
