MARX, FREUD, ALCHEMY, AND ASTROLOGY. There was a time when educated people devoted enormous amounts of time and effort in studying astrology and alchemy. Now, only a few historians learn about alchemy, but enormous resources are still devoted to astrology. I wonder which route the study of Marx and Freud will go. At the moment, it looks like it will be the route that astrology went.

Should Freud and Marx really be linked? Neo-liberal economic theory and the collapse of the USSR seem to have doomed Marx. However, I wonder if this isn’t premature. A major economic crisis may promote re-evaluation of some of the core ideas that Philip alluded to in a previous post. Indeed Marx lives on in many elements of “post-modern” thought although it’s not fashionable to mention that too prominently.
