NORTHWESTERN’S MOTTO.

NORTHWESTERN’S MOTTO. Here is an article from The Chronicle of Higher Education (link via artsandlettersdaily) about how colleges and universities in their efforts to improve their brands are seeking to come up with better slogans (or “mottos”). I like the student-generated phrases: “where fun goes to die” and “guilt without sex.” The article asks, “Quick: What’s the slogan of your alma mater? An extremely informal and decidedly unscientific survey indicates that many people don’t know.” I went to Northwestern, and I know the answer. In contrast to Harvard, whose slogan is “Veritas”–Truth, or to Yale, whose slogan is “Lux et Veritas”—Light and Truth, Northwestern has the slogan “Quaecumque sunt vera”—whatsoever things are true. A satisfyingly modest and skeptical slogan.
