THE BEAT HOTEL.

THE BEAT HOTEL. Our family has stayed in a hotel in Paris which was famous as The Beat Hotel because Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, William Burroughs and Gregory Corso stayed there in the late fifties and early sixties.(apparently Kerouac never stayed there). Ginsberg wrote “Kaddish” there. This wikipedia article says that it was a “class 13” hotel, which is apparently the lowest grade possible, and describes it further: “Hot water was available Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays….. Curtains and bedspreads were changed and washed every spring. The linen was (sometimes and in principle) changed every month.” It’s a very nice hotel today.

It’s a luxury hotel, but it can’t really decide on its name. There are several names, as I recall. Family, correct. Vieux Hotel de Paris, Hotel Vieux de Paris, or Hotel de Vieux Paris. So, which is it, fans? Rue git lecoeur. am I spelling THAT right? Boy, it’s been a while.
