NANOWRIMO AND JACK KEROUAC. This article makes the connection between Jack Kerouac and NANOWRIMO because Kerouac wrote ON THE ROAD in twenty days, typing the draft single-spaced on a scroll that was 120 feet long. The article questions what it calls the “myth” that Kerouac did this, but I have now seen the scroll at an exhibit at the New York Public Library (there until March 16, 2008). What the New York Public Library calls “Kerouac’s advocacy of “spontaneous prose†and the principle of “first thought, best thought†certainly fits in with the spirit of NANOWRIMO.
