DEFINITION OF THE SHORT STORY. I have not belonged to a book group for a long time, but Mary Jane and I belong to a short story group, conducted by Carroll Stenson, that meets weekly. We have read and discussed hundreds of short stories in the last few years. I am often reminded of my brother Elmer’s definition of a short story: “a short piece of fiction in which a character’s life is ruined.â€

At our last short story group meeting, Philip repeated this definition–giving Elmer credit, of course. It was greeted with roars of delight. Elmer, you’re now quotable in Darien.
I hope the short story group doesn’t still attribute “educating a beautiful woman is like pouring honey in a fine Swiss watch” to Mr. Schaefer, though ; )
I should add that I don’t know what chills me more, the sexism in that character’s quote or the thought of honey in the Swiss watch.
