MISTAKEN IDENTITY (COMMENT). Twins run into mistaken identity a lot. Molly in a comment on MY COMEDY OF ERRORS MOMENT told my favorite story of mistaken identity. I early became able to identify the confused expression when people realized there was something wrong. Only once did I mistake the look. I saw somebody staring at me, crossed the street and said, as I often did, “You must know my brother.” He told me brusquely that he had never heard of either of us. Thirty years ago, I went to one of Elmer’s law school classes and sat in the back. Great consternation rolled through the classroom. (I think that some of the excitement was because I held my coffee cup the same way he would). I played in a faculty-student softball game that weekend and in about the third inning, one of the students called out, “Hey, Professor Schaefer is playing both second and third base.” I worked with one of Elmer’s students, who claimed that the first few weeks whenever he saw me, he had a momentary twinge of fear that he was going to be called on.
