HONG KONG TEN YEARS LATER. Yesterday was the tenth anniversary of the Handover of Hong Kong to China. I was in Hong Kong working on a financing until a few days before the Handover. There were no signs of drama. There were some visible preparations for the celebration, and the British were still firing off a cannon at noon each day. In the ten years since, there hasn’t been a lot of drama relating to Hong Kong. This article in the Economist (and note the other articles in the special section) points out that there has been more change in China in the ensuing ten years than in Hong Kong (the Economist had predicted that Hong Kong would change China more than China would change Hong Kong. They are commendably honest in saying that Hong Kong’s role in China’s changes is debatable). The slogan for the Handover was “One country, two systems.” It is still too early to see how it will all turn out.
