SIGHT SEEING IN FRANCE.

SIGHT SEEING IN FRANCE. Because the underlying events took place in and around Argentan in Normandy, THE LAST DUEL (the last Medieval duel) had special interest for me. We once had a quick lunch in Argentan and found it enormously attractive. I have since found out that there is a wonderful castle in Argentan, and THE LAST DUEL informed me that it was at that castle that Henry II learned that four of his knights had crossed the Channel to kill Thomas Becket. Everybody in our family wanted to explore Argentan, but we had to be a long distance away by nightfall. I came up with a line that is much quoted in our family: “We don’t have time to look at anything. We’re too busy sight seeing.”

    A man’s reach should exceed his grasp–or what’s a return trip for?

This reminds me of how I feel about much of my educational experience: “I don’t have time to learn anything; I’m too busy with schoolwork!” I found myself thinking that a lot over the years. And yet, I grudgingly admit that a lot of the schoolwork I did was useful. But now I’m very much enjoying educating myself.

I agree with Mom, and I must add, it sounds like a return trip is in order!
