GIVING THANKS FOR MAGNA CARTA. Among the articles commemorating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta this year was this one by Daniel Hannan in which he argued that in the American Revolution, the patriots were asserting their rights as Englishmen as stated in Magna Carta. He said: “Nowhere, at this stage, do we find the slightest hint that the patriots were fighting for universal rights. On the contrary, they were very clear that they were fighting for the privileges bestowed on them by Magna Carta.”
