A TRANSLATOR ADDING DETAILS.

A TRANSLATOR ADDING DETAILS. Mary Jane has been practicing her French by reading the French translation of Josephine Tey’s great book exonerating Richard III, THE DAUGHTER OF TIME.

On page 22 of the original English version, a character took two cookies that she had been given and “dropped them into her handbag”.

On page 23 of the French translation, the same character took the same two cookies and “les enveloppa dans un papier, les mit dans son sac.” (wrapped them in a paper and put them in her handbag).

Mary Jane took delight in the way that the translator had added to the text to make the character act more in accordance with French etiquette.
