THE PESAPALLO SCANDAL. I would have thought that pesapallo, a sport that is said to be especially popular in rural Finland, in a country which I consider to be made up of honest people, would not be associated with scandal. Google called my attention to this wikipedia entry on the “Finnish pesäpallo match-fixing scandal”. The scandal took place in 1998 when players and managers of eight (!) teams fixed five different matches. Finnish police interrogated 460 persons involving the scandal, and over 30 people were sentenced to fines or discharged.

It was a mixture of gambling and sport that led to the scandal. It turns out that there was apparently a lot of wagering on pesapallo matches. The fines to the Finnish national betting agency amounted to between 3 and 4 million dollars.
