THE IMPORTANCE FOR ME OF FREUD AND MARX. Kids, in my youth Freud and Marx were even more dominant figures in the culture than they are today after some 50 years of criticism. I posted here that: “I have seen it remarked that in the 1950’s intellectuals—and especially New York intellectuals—felt that what distinguished them from others was that they knew the ins and outs of Freud and Marx. Fifty years later, there are many who believe that Freud and Marx have been proved wrong.” Comments by Mary Jane and Dick Weisfelder (see here and here) provide some perspective on the influence in the 20th century of Marx and Freud even for somebody like me who never studied them. When I use the phrase “It’s in the water” about some current thinking, this is what I mean.
