ALBERS AND COLOR.

ALBERS AND COLOR. Having a daughter who is an artist has made Mary Jane and me more conscious of what we see. It was less than a month ago that I sent Mary Jane this wikipedia entry about Josef Albers in connection with some discussion we were having. Joseph Albers was an artist and teacher who did a number of studies of the interaction of colors. This Goggle images page shows a number of those studies. Colors change depending on which other colors are juxtaposed to them.

This vimeo by Richard Nelson uses the format that Albers used in his Homage to the Square studies to show what happens to a color when it is between two other colors.

The Controversial Dress I posted on here illustrates the effect of our eyes correcting automatically for different light conditions. The Homage to the Square studies illustrate the effect of adjacent colors on our perceptions of color.
