THE VOICES OF UNDER MILKWOOD. Apparently, as with Eliot, the reputation of Dylan Thomas is in question. This wikipedia entry says: “Thomas’ position as one of the great modern poets has been much discussed, though this has not tarnished his popularity amongst the public, who find his work accessible.”

His play for voices, Under Milkwood, should be enough to preserve his reputation. It’s an unusual art form—a radio play for dozens of characters in a Welsh village. Apparently there were performances of Under Milkwood all over the world last week. We went to a strong performance of Under Milkwood at the Westport Community Theater on October 30. Eight fine actors, many voices.

Here is a Youtube of the beginning of Under Milkwood with Richard Burton playing the “First Voice”. The other voices begin at the five minute 15 second mark.
