THE UTAH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL—PLAY DEVELOPMENT. We have returned home from the Utah Shakespeare Festival. We were there because Mary Jane’s play Hamlet’s Shakespeare was one of three plays chosen for readings in the Festival’s New American Playwrights program. Mary Jane had the opportunity to attend four rehearsals and then three performances before live audiences. Under the guidance of Henry Woronicz, she made changes in the script throughout the process. Every scene in the play was tightened. The audience at the festival knows its Shakespeare and gave helpful feedback. In addition to the comments from the actors, their line readings and character choices were very helpful. And the director, Henry Woronicz, is a brilliant man. Mary Jane returns home with more suggestions to implement.
