MONDRIAN’S REJECTION OF NATURE.

MONDRIAN’S REJECTION OF NATURE. Kelly Grovier had a review of the Mondrian and his Studios exhibit in the TLS (July 11). The review called my attention to the exhibit. Grovier says that Mondrian told a visitor that he had whitewashed the leaves of an artificial flower in his studio “in order to banish that impossibly naturalistic green from my interior”. Grovier uses the quote to illustrate Mondrian’s desire to “eradicate any trace of the organic world from his art and surroundings”.
