MOST PITCHES IN AN AT BAT—LUKE APPLING. I posted here about White Sox fan Jean Shepherd (the auteur of A CHRISTMAS STORY) and his pride in Luke Appling’s ability to foul off pitches. I was watching a game last week, and the Colorado announcers, after a 12 pitch at bat, wondered what the record for the longest at bat is. Their staff soon supplied the answer: 24 pitches. Luke Appling was the batter. Here is the answer on the ask.com site, which notes that records are don’t go back all the way.
