BILL DEWITT AND BASEBALL HISTORY.

BILL DEWITT AND BASEBALL HISTORY. Tyler Kepner had a pleasing article in the New York Times (October 25) which traced a lot of baseball history in the life of one man. Bill DeWitt, Jr., is the owner of the Saint Louis Cardinals, who are currently in the World Series (and have won the World Series twice under DeWitt Jr.’s ownership). The DeWitts have been important in baseball throughout my life, but the family was involved with baseball long before. Bill DeWitt (senior) got his start selling soda at Cardinal games in 1916. The father worked for Branch Rickey and became the owner of the legendary Saint Louis Browns (legendary for lack of success). I posted here about how Bill Veeck once sent a midget up to bat in a major league game. It turns out that the midget was wearing Bill DeWitt, Jr.’s uniform (DeWitt, aged 9, was the batboy for the Browns).

  1. Time for Phil to be drafted to write a baseball column.
Of course, our son already does.

Where can I read Nick’s column?

  3. Philip says:

Nick posts roughly four times a month at the Southside Showdown (link: http://southsideshowdown.com/). The site is of most interest to diehard White Sox fans or to somebody who is interest in how you rebuild a team almost from scratch. Most of Nick’s articles as well as the other articles on the site apply Sabermetrics as a matter of course.

  4. Dick Weisfelder says:

Guess the AL MVP selecters still haven’t caught on to sabermetrics!
