MORE EVIDENCE OF THE CIVILIZING ROLE OF THE VIKINGS (COMMENT). In a comment on my post on the ten minute animated history of the English language, Andrew sent me links to two animations on the contributions of the Vikings to the English language. They are from “The Vicious Vikings”, part of a series I think of as the Terrible Tudors. Andrew’s kids are fans of the series . I am also. This animation gives some English words that are derived from Viking words.

The words in the animation that are attributed to the Vikings are: “scare”, “anger”, “berserk”, “die”, “rotten”, “mistake” and “hit”.

However, as I posted here, I have long claimed that the Vikings, rather than being ruthless raiders, were engaged in spreading civilization so I was pleased to see the animation included another word that came from the Vikings: “cake”.
