THE UNITY OF LES MIS—CHARACTERS. Having one singer perform the songs in Les Mis sheds light on the show. Can we imagine the characters as aspects of one person, as representative of humanity (“To love another person is to see the face of God.”?— Perhaps. A stretch, but the great Alan Cumming has just finished performing a one man Macbeth on Broadway. The production is set in an asylum. This review in the New Statesman by Tara Isabella Burton says that Cumming and his directors “utilize the chilling motif of the asylum to illuminate how definitively Macbeth’s misdeeds have upended the natural order”. Or perhaps the madman played by Cumming is representative of humanity.
