IS WRITING LIKE LATIN ON THE EVE OF THE RENAISSANCE? Is the internet going to have the same kind of effect on thinking that the printing press had? Christopher Caldwell had an article in the Financial Times (April 13-14) which raised the question. Caldwell cited Elizabeth Daley of the University of Southern California, who compares writing today to Latin on the eve of the Renaissance. Latin was about to be replaced. You Tube is the equivalent of vernacular Italian—and, we can infer, the wave of the future.
