LAPHROAIG—THE ROMANCE OF ISLAY. Jefford presents the counter-arguments that Islay makes a difference. He begins with an economist’s argument. Businessmen are assumed to know what they are doing. If location didn’t matter, it would be irrational to distill whisky expensively on a remote island. The logistical expenses that distillers incur are evidence that location makes a difference. There was also testimony by experts at the seminar. Jim McEwan of the Bruichladdich distillery said that he can taste and smell the difference between malt made from Islay barley and malt made from barley from the north of Scotland. This is enough evidence to enable me to to continue to experience Laphroiag as the product of what Jefford calls “the wind-harried, gale-prone island”.
