THE SOUNDS OF THE UNIVERSE. The first post on this blog expressed my wonder that the echo from the Big Bang makes up a lot of the static you hear on the radio. This article by Honor Harger on Huffington Post describes some of the sounds of the universe and has links to some of the sounds. For example, you can listen to the sound of a solar flare. The Sun is the loudest object in the radio sky, and its flares, which last from half a minute to two minutes, are described as sounding “like a rapid hissing noise followed by a gradual decrease back to the original audio level.” Another sound that can be heard is that of a pulsar (“a highly condensed neutron star that contains an enormous amount of energy”). A pulsar rotates many times a second, and each rotation sounds like a click.
