LONGING FOR A PARENT. A parent who is absent can create a longing in a child which lasts a lifetime. So can a parent who is remote. People outside the family may have only a limited idea of what a child is going through. A parent who is unkind to a child may be charming to people outside the family. Warren Buffett’s mother, who was so hard on Buffett and his sister, was vivacious and made friends easily. At the heart of Shirley Maclaine’s career is remarkable charm. She would make short appearances in her daughter’s life, charm her daughter, and then disappear for long stretches. Before reading LUCKY ME, I looked at some reviews on Amazon. Many of them spoke of how the book reveals Sachi Parker’s longing for her mother. They were right.
