INJURIES AT SECOND BASE. Less than a week ago, Buddy Van Alstyne was commenting on my post advocating a rule change to provide that when a baserunner is trying to break up a double play, it would be an automatic double play if the baserunner is not in contact with second base at the conclusion of his slide. Now, in the National League Championship Series, as this article reports, there is controversy because second baseman Marco Scutaro of the San Francisco Giants was injured and had to leave a game because of a “take out slide” by a Saint Louis Cardinal player. There is a video of the slide with the article. The baserunner was not in contact with second base at the end of the slide.
