IS THE “COMPUTER INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION” A DISAPPOINTMENT? Professor Gordon captions one section of this paper: “Inventions are not all created equal”. In fact, he says that: “The great inventions of IR #2 [Industrial Revolution 2—the inventions that were made in a short 30 year period, 1870 to 1900] were just more important than anything that has happened since.” We think of ourselves as living in the midst of a computer revolution, and Gordon acknowledges that thought by identifying the computer revolution as “Industrial Revolution 3.” However, Professor Gordon suggests that the third industrial revolution, centered on computers, will have have less effect on economic growth than the others. He concludes from the data that the computer did not have a notable effect on productivity except for the 8 year period between 1996 and 2004.
