BASEBALL HISTORY AS AN INTERNET GAME.

BASEBALL HISTORY AS AN INTERNET GAME. Nick surprised me recently by mentioning Red Schoendienst. Nick is currently participating in an internet game in which he drafts a team made up of baseball players from the past. His team is then matched against other teams in a series of simulated games. He drafted Red Schoendienst out of a pool of players from 1946. There are 16 participants in this particular league. Here is the site for Whatifsports, which shows the myriad of leagues and games that are possible based on drafting past players. The database of players goes back to 1885. Nick knew Schoendienst was in a way before my time because I didn’t become a baseball fan until the 1949 season, but that I would know Schoendienst from the 1950’s. In fact, when Nick mentioned his name, I told Nick that I had a vivid memory of Schoendienst hitting the winning home run in the 14th inning of the 1950 All-Star game. For me, one of the pleasures of LEFTY (posted on here) was reading about baseball players from a period before I was born. Nick is enjoying the same experience.

It’s an absolute blast and there are endless combinations of themes and restrictions and formats.

I have managed to use Dick Allen in every single season where he was eligible.
