MY PARENTS WERE UNPREPARED.

MY PARENTS WERE UNPREPARED. When my brother and I were born in 1942, we were two months premature. Apparently, this was dangerous at the time, and my parents often expressed their thanks to Dr. Ellworthy for getting us through. Because of the state of medicine, until a day or two before the event, nobody knew that there were two of us and that we were about to be born. The family story, as often told by my mother was that they had not yet made any preparation for a baby, much less two. When my mother got to the hospital, my father assured her that he would get everything that was needed. When she returned home, she found out that all he had bought was different kinds of sporting equipment.

I don’t remember the story about our parents being surprised by our early arrival, I’m sorry to say. I do remember my dad’s saying that they were told shortly before the births that there would be more than one child. It wasn’t long after the furore over the Dionne quintuplets and Dad claimed to have walked around their lot, deciding where to put the lemonade stand.
