A FATHER-DAUGHTER STORY.

A FATHER-DAUGHTER STORY. My father was a gentle man, but he had strict rules, especially where safety, as he perceived it, was concerned. (We all thought that his caution came from the early death of his father, who was hit by a car.) One of his strict rules was that we were forbidden to go to Riverview, the amusement park near us. I think he was especially worried by roller coasters. We all accepted the firmness of my father’s views and almost never argued with his decisions. There came a time when my sister Mary was in high school, and her boy friend asked her to go to Riverview with him. She told us that she would get my father to permit it. My brother and I thought this was impossible and told her so. At dinner, Mary asked if she could go to Riverview. My father was a gentle man, but this time he actually pounded the table and shouted,: “No! No! A thousand times No!” A pause. Mary looked at each of us, grinned, and said “He’s weakening.” She went to Riverview.
